Case study CFF Cucaracha
CFF Cucaracha is a kick ass font family we created for Magma’s project ‘Bastard – Choose My Identity’. The idea behind Bastard was to bring together photographers, writers, illustrators, graphic designers, musicians and typographers to create a solid and unique book that also functions as a work of art.
Boris Kahl asked us to donate a font that they could use for designing an article in the book. Instead we made two.
The Bastard Project is all about cultural identity and the development of new things by sampling, mixing and crossing. In their search to define cultural identity and cultural bastarding, Christian Ernst, Lars Harmsen and André Rösler traveled to various hot spots highlighting the globalization trend. Beside pictures from the photographer Christian Ernst and illustrations from Andre Rösler, the new fonts were presented. Writers all around the world contributed short stories to complete the book.
Kick ass font family
After some consideration we decided to take our chances and mess up CFF Nantua, one of our oldest fonts. We fired some filters at it and spiced it up with loads of character.
CFF Cucaracha is a real bastard. It’s provocative, loud and egocentric. We had so much fun working on it that we decided to make special icons out of the most distinctive characters. With these icons we could create our own wallpapers and funky decorative elements.
Last but not least, we made the Wixa font. This is a double outlined version of CFF Cucaracha Font, to be used for setting big headlines. It has lots of character in its floral details.
What evolved out of it was CFF Cucaracha a freaky, crazy, floral family of two fonts and 8 bonus icons:
- CFF Cucaracha Font
- CFF Cucaracha Wixa
- CFF Cucaracha Icons
Funky icon set
In the public release we integrated the icon set in CFF Cucaracha Font, so you don’t have to switch to another typeface just to use an icon. Just type the designated characters and build your own pattern and decorations.
